Singalila

The jungles in the east are treasure houses to the most precious and strange flora and fauna. One such treasure in the east is Singalila National Park in West Bengal. Established in 1986, the park is one of the few places on earth where you will come across Red Panda.

The view of Kanchenjunga Massif  on the backdrop of  clear blue skies from the park is fascinating. The park offers the view of mountains spanning from Nepal to Bhutan.

The park is part of the Eastern Himalayas and situated at a high elevation with 1900 meter to 3,630 m from the sea level. The Park makes the border line with neighbour country Nepal to the west and with state Sikkim to the North.

The park is home to exotic red panda and Himalayan black bear and is also home to different species of Orchids. The areas vegetation may be broadly classified as temperate and alpine vegetation stretching right up to the snows. The avifauna is a unique mix of Himalayan and Indo-Burmese forms.

Sandakphu, the heighest point on the Singalila ridge, is the culminating point of many trekking routes in the Darjeeling-Sikkim region. At an altitude of 3,636 m, it is located at a distance of 58 km. from Darjeeling. Trek to Sandakphu starts from Dhotrey or Maneybhanjan. Dhotrey and Maneybhanjan can be reached from NJP rly stn or Bagdogra airport by 4/4.30 hours drive.

Tourists can take Landrovers from Manevanjan. Landrovers can go upto Phalut now a days. Sandakphu is resplendent with the ethereal beauty of magnolias, rhododendrons, primulas and other sub-alpine flowers. It also contains more than 600 varieties of orchids, the largest to be found in a single geographical area in the world.

During April-May there may be occasional showers in this region. May be occasional rains during the first half of the month of October. But November is generally dry and visibility is excellent. First half of December is also good, though rather cold; besides that there are occasional snow fall.
